The Sri Lankan government introduced the Sri Lankan Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to facilitate international tourism. Nationals of selected countries, including Iranians, are eligible to visit Sri Lanka for 30 days without requesting a visa beforehand. Instead, they can simply apply for the ETA. The ETA is completely available online, and so Iranian citizens can fill it in from their homes’ comfort and do not need to schedule an appointment at an embassy.
Iranian passport holders planning short-term visits can select one of the following ETA types for Sri Lanka:
Iranians who need to stay for longer periods or wish to relocate to Sri Lanka for other purposes such as full-time job seeking or long-term studies must note the ETA does not apply to their needs. In this case, they must schedule an appointment at the Sri Lankan embassy in Teheran.
Iranian travellers can visit Sri Lanka with the Sri Lanka ETA for tourism for the following purposes:
The ETA for tourism is valid for 180 days, grants Iranian passport holders entry and a stay of 30 days.
Iranians visiting Sri Lanka for business and investment opportunities can request the Sri Lanka ETA for business. This electronic travel authorisation allows entries for the following purposes:
Like the Tourist ETA, this travel authorisation is valid for 6 months and grants a stay of up to 30 days.
On their way to a third destination, Iranian arrivals passing through Sri Lanka usually do not require an entry authorisation. Nevertheless, If their flight departs between 8 and 48 hours later, they must obtain the Sri Lanka ETA for transit. If their connecting flight leaves after 2 days, they must request either a standard visa or a tourist or business ETA.
Iranian passport holders must check they comply with the requirements for the Sri Lankan ETA for Iranians before beginning their application form:
Iranians with a passport that will expire in 6 months or less on the date they plan to enter Sri Lanka must renew it before delivering their application. Likewise, Iranian travellers are recommended to use a credit or debit card previously activated for online payments. Finally, they must submit an email address they frequently use for all communications, including the ETA issuance.
Once Iranian nationals confirm they meet the requirements, they will continue to the Sri Lankan application form. The process of applying for a Sri Lankan ETA is quick and simple and takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. They will have to submit the following personal and passport information:
Applicants are advised to double-check that all the information entered in the application form is accurate and error-free. Any mismatch or typo can lead to delays or even a rejection of their request.
Once Iranian nationals have answered all the questions in the form, they finalize the application process by paying the ETA fees. As mentioned previously, The Sri Lankan government recommends Iranians to check their cards have been previously activated for international payments and carry sufficient funds.
Once payment has been actioned, the Sri Lankan government receives the application forms and inspects them for validation. This process is fairly quick and straightforward and usually takes 24 hours. They then issue the approved ETAs to the Iranian nationals by email attached as a PDF.
Iranian citizens are recommended to print out a copy of the ETA as soon as they receive it and store it next to their travel documents. Upon arrival at Sri Lankan borders, they will be required to present the following documents and information:
If Iranian passport holders wish to prolong their visit, they can request their Sri Lanka ETA extension. They must organize an appointment at the Immigration Services Centre in Colombo or at the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Battaramulla. Before their appointment, they will have to take a passport picture complying with the Sri Lankan passport photo requirements.
